Penang, 28 November 2016: The upgrading works to eliminate the undulating issue at Pile Embankment No. 7 (PE 7), from KM 2.8 to KM 3.1, is progressing well and the discomfort will soon be over. The embankment that connects the land expressway to Jambatan Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah (JSAHMS) had to be closed on both bounds in stages in order for the upgrading works to be implemented.

The upgrading works has now entered its phase two, which is to upgrade the embankment on the West Bound (to Batu Maung). Contractors are now working against time and bad weather to expedite the works soonest possible so that JSAHMS users will continue to enjoy a smoother, safer and comfortable ride once the work is completed.

“The first phase of the upgrading works, which was on the East Bound (to Batu Kawan) was practically completed on 31 October 2016 and the second phase had just started on 1 November 2016, whereby the contra flow is now being activated on the East Bound to facilitate the traffic flow to and from Penang Island,” says YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Mohd. Ashari Alias, Managing Director or JKSB.

PE 7 is a pile embankment connecting the land expressway and the bridge. The upgrading works involve advance material technology, but not easy to implement, as contractor has to relocate utilities lines and communications cables in the area prior to the excavation works. Furthermore, they must also ensure that the embedded piles under the embankment are intact during the excavation works to avoid damages and affect the integrity of the embankment.

“The top soils of the embankment will be removed and replaced with the Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Foam, which are lighter, but stronger than the conventional soils. The use of EPS will practically eliminate the undulating issue at PE 7 permanently,” continues Dato’ Ir. Mohd. Ashari.

He explained this during a media visit to PE 7 organised by JKSB for the local media members. During the visit, media members were also informed of the delays at the beginning of the first stage of the upgrading works on the East Bound.

JKSB acknowledged that the upgrading works at PE 7 has caused discomfort to its users as the traffic can be at snail pace during peak hours at the contra flow area. Nevertheless, users have been well informed on the traffic situation on daily basis. JKSB is currently working closely with the contractor to expedite the upgrading works and to complete it on time or sooner.

JKSB once again like to remind its users to adhere to all the traffic signs and instructions when approaching PE 7 from both sides.

It has always been JKSB’s aspiration to be a communicative organisation and it encourages its users to contact its Hotline at 1300-30-2828 or email at This email address is being protected from spambots.
