Assalammualaikum and Salam 1 Malaysia,
Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd (JKSB) is a government-owned company, appointed as the concessionaire to design, construct, manage, operate and maintain the Second Penang Bridge project.
Launched under the 9th Malaysian Plan, the project was identified by the Federal Government as a catalyst to the socio-economic growth and development in the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER).
After 5 years and 3 months, the bridge was officially opened by YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, on 1 March 2014; and the bridge was aptly named as Jambatan Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah.
The new bridge links Batu Kawan on the mainland and Batu Maung on the island. These two areas are considered backwater towns in Penang, especially Batu Kawan. Now, new townships are emerging in these two locations such as Southbay in Batu Maung and Bandar Cassia in Batu Kawan.
A new industrial park is also being developed currently in Batu Kawan, neighbouring the bridge and its land expressway with international brand names such as Honda, Bose, VAT Manufacturing and Malaysia Automotive Lighting Sdn Bhd (AL) has already started its operations there.
The new bridge promises the users a comfortable and safer journey on its 16.9km bridge over the water and its land expressway. The whole alignment provides a dedicated motorcycle lane, separated from the car lanes by the concrete New Jersey Barrier (NJB), thus providing additional safety to motorcyclists.
The bridge is also capable to withstand a far field earthquake up to 7.5 at the Richter scale and its toll plaza complex is rated with a Platinum Rating for the Green Building Index (GBI), the first building in Penang with such GBI rating.
The designs, especially the ‘Double S’ curves on the marine bridge will definitely provide users with unique panoramic view of the island and its surrounding; and offers a safer and comfortable drive.
